How to reduce the interest rate on an existing business loan
Your company is still paying its old interest rate while new offers appear cheaper. A useful first step is to approach your existing bank: prepare your arguments, request revised terms and check the savings after fees. This article explains the process, provides an example and includes a calculator.
Where to start
- Find the interest rate type and the procedure for changing it in your agreement.
- Compare terms using the same outstanding balance and remaining term.
- Prepare financial figures and a specific request for the bank.
- Calculate savings after all additional costs.
Submitting a request does not itself change the loan terms. Continue making payments under the existing terms until the changes take effect.
Will your loan rate fall after a Bank of Russia decision?
A reduction in the Bank of Russia key rate does not automatically change every existing business loan. First, understand how your particular interest rate works. This distinction is also discussed by SberBusiness in its explanation of the effect of central bank decisions.
| Contract term | What to check | What you can discuss |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed interest rate | Whether there is a separate adjustment mechanism and who makes the decision | A rate review under the existing agreement |
| Reference rate + bank margin | The reset date, margin and minimum rate | Whether the reset is correct and whether the margin can be reduced |
| Discount for meeting conditions | Turnover, insurance, other obligations and the review period | Application of the contractual discount and supporting documents |
With a floating rate, a change in the reference rate and a reduction in the bank’s margin are separate matters. The reference rate may change according to the contractual formula, while reducing the margin requires a separate decision unless an automatic review is provided for.
Documentation procedures also differ. For example, clause 3.7 of Bank Perm’s corporate loan agreement template, for the grounds specified in it, provides for a rate change by notification without a separate supplemental agreement. These are one bank’s terms; do not assume they apply to your agreement.
Ask the lender for a document confirming the new rate, its effective date and the calculation procedure. A manager’s verbal assurance is not sufficient grounds to change your payment calendar.
Arguments that can support a discussion about a lower rate
It is helpful to build your request around two questions: what has changed in your company, and what comparable financing terms it could obtain now. A letter saying “other banks are cheaper” without an amount, term or requirements provides little basis for a meaningful comparison.
- Debt repayment record. Show timely payments and compliance with contractual obligations.
- Financial performance. Prepare current figures for revenue, profit, cash flow and debt commitments, explaining significant changes.
- Lower transaction risk. Highlight reduced debt, improved verified financial figures or changes to security, if these have actually occurred.
- A comparable offer. Specify the other bank’s rate, fees, term, schedule, collateral and additional conditions. An advertised rate “from” a certain level is not the same as terms approved for your company.
This is a basis for negotiations, not a list of conditions that obliges the bank to agree. Its decision depends on the agreement, its assessment of the company and the lender’s terms.
Start by gathering the agreement and its schedules, the current repayment schedule, outstanding balance, fee list, financial statements and payment forecast. Confirm the exact documents and reporting periods with the bank.
How to approach your bank: four steps
1. Decide exactly what you want to change
Make a specific request: reduce the fixed rate, reduce the margin over the reference rate, or apply a contractual discount. State separately whether you want to retain the term, facility limit and principal repayment arrangements.
2. Confirm the review procedure
Check how to submit the request, which documents are needed and the expected response date. Ask whether reviewing the request or changing the terms incurs a fee, when it becomes payable, and whether the security must be reassessed.
3. Submit your request and calculations
Include your financial arguments and a cost comparison. Keep proof of submission. Continue following the current schedule until the new terms take effect; the request itself does not defer payments or reduce accruals.
4. Check the final documents
Check the rate, accrual start date, fees, duration of any discount and new obligations. For an annuity loan, ask whether the monthly payment is recalculated while keeping the term unchanged. For a revolving credit facility (RCF), clarify whether the new terms apply to existing drawdowns or only future ones.
Example: savings from a reduction from 24% to 20%
The company has RUB 10 million of debt remaining over 12 months. Principal is repaid in equal instalments at the end of each month. The rate falls from 24% to 20% p.a. from the start of the calculation period. The one-off cost of changing the terms is RUB 50,000, with additional monthly costs of RUB 2,000.
Figures are illustrative. We use equal monthly periods and a monthly rate equal to the annual rate divided by 12. This is a worked example, not a bank offer.
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Interest at 24% | 1 300 000 RUB |
| Interest at 20% | 1 083 333 RUB |
| Interest savings | 216 667 RUB |
| Additional costs: 50,000 + 2,000 × 12 | 74 000 RUB |
| Savings after costs | 142 667 RUB |
Calculating “10 million × 4% = RUB 400,000” would overstate the result here because the debt falls each month. If the entire principal were repaid only at year end, interest savings would indeed be RUB 400,000 before additional costs, but that is a different repayment schedule.
Savings after costs = difference in future interest − additional costs
Do not count fees already paid or costs that are the same under both options again in this difference. If the term or schedule changes, compare all remaining cash payments under both options afresh.
Interest rate reduction savings calculator
Compare two rates using the same outstanding balance and remaining term. Enter amounts in RUB. The calculation assumes the new terms start in the first modelled month.
The model uses a monthly rate equal to the annual rate divided by 12; both rates are fixed. It excludes calendar-day calculations, taxes, discounting, new drawdowns, early repayments and fees added to principal. A seasonal schedule, changed term or floating rate requires a separate date-based calculation. Check final amounts against the bank’s documents.
Sample request for a lower interest rate
Replace the fields in square brackets and retain only substantiated arguments. If the bank requires its own form, use that form.
Subject: interest rate review under agreement No. [number] dated [date]
Please consider reducing the interest rate under loan agreement [number] from [current rate] to [requested rate] % p.a. with effect from [desired date]. The outstanding principal as at [date] is RUB [amount], and the final maturity date is [date].
Grounds for this request: [repayment record, verified changes in financial performance, a comparable offer from another bank or other factual circumstances]. Supporting documents are enclosed.
Please confirm separately whether the current term and principal repayment arrangements can remain unchanged, the additional costs, the conditions for applying the new rate and the procedure for documenting the changes. Please provide a calculation of future payments.
Contact person: [full name, position, telephone, email].
Enclosures: [list of documents].
[Date, authorised signatory’s signature].
For a floating rate, specify the desired margin over the reference rate and ask separately about the minimum rate. A request to “reduce the key rate” is not a request to change the margin.
What to check if the bank offers a lower rate
- Fees and services. How much costs increase over the entire remaining term: one-off fees, business banking services, insurance, valuation or other conditions attached to the offer.
- Start date and duration of the discount. Whether it applies immediately, for a few months or until maturity, and what rate applies afterwards.
- Required account turnover. Whether the company can meet the new requirements and what happens if it fails to do so.
- Term and schedule. A lower payment achieved by extending the term does not necessarily reduce total borrowing costs.
- Limit and security. Whether the offer requires you to reduce available financing or provide additional collateral.
Request two sets of cash payments: one under the existing terms and one after the review. Compare them from the same date, including all future costs. Then check whether your business will retain a sufficient cash buffer after each payment.
If the bank declines
Ask whether the matter can be reconsidered after updated financial reports or changes in performance. Also assess refinancing, including the costs of closing the old loan, arranging the new one and potentially transferring security. A preliminary offer from another bank does not mean the funds will be disbursed.
If the company is already struggling to make payments, describe the shortfall clearly in your request and propose an achievable schedule. A small interest rate reduction may not solve a large principal repayment problem. Negotiations in that situation need to cover a wider range of changes to the schedule and other terms.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reduce my rate without moving to another bank?
You can ask your existing lender to review the terms. Whether a change is possible, its parameters and the documentation procedure depend on the agreement and the bank’s decision.
Do I need to wait for the Bank of Russia key rate to fall?
You can prepare documents and request terms in advance. For a fixed rate, a central bank decision does not itself replace the review procedure in the agreement. For a floating rate, check the formula and reset dates first.
Can I pay less immediately after submitting a request?
The request itself does not change the schedule. Continue meeting your existing obligations until the new terms take effect.
Does a lower rate always mean savings?
No. Fees, additional services, an extended term or a changed schedule may reduce or eliminate the benefit. Compare all future payments under both options.
When to seek help
If the bank offers a lower rate in exchange for new obligations, your company has several loans, or it is unclear whether revised terms or refinancing would be better, comparing the offers in one calculation can help.
NG Finance can help review your debt structure, assess costs and prepare arguments for financing discussions. The bank determines the final terms after reviewing the company and its documents.
